Motorists demand Kanchi causeway be repaired
It is a risky ride for motorists using the Thathi Thoppu causeway across the Vegavathi river in Kancheepuram. They claimed that the causeway is weak and requires immediate attention.

Used by the residents of Sadhavaram, Orikai and Varadharaja Colony, the causeway, a raised road, was constructed 21 years ago.
According to officials, several hundred vehicles cross the river every day using the road. Locals claimed that the road was left damaged after a spell of heavy rains last year.
Fearing a collapse, most vehicles do not use the causeway and instead prefer to take a circuitous approach to cross the river. Even pedestrians are wary of using the road, they said.
The residents also alleged that the local administration officials are turning a blind eye to their grievance.
“As the causeway is damaged, I travel an extra 2 kilometres and use another route to cross the river. We have asked the municipal officials to repair it but they are not ready to take any action,” said Ganesh, a motorist.
When contacted, Kancheepuram municipality engineer R Mahendran told DTNext, “We will look into the issue and take steps to repair the causeway.”
