A police officer is facing the charge of allegedly attacking a 22-year-old college student during a vehicle check near Chetpet on Thursday night after a quarrel broke out over vehicle documents. The student, Haroon, was riding with his friends on a bike when the police team stopped them for verification.
As there was some mismatch of documents, the sub inspector took him to the station for obtaining a written statement. A senior police officer said Haroon produced the photocopy of the vehicle registration certificate in which the registration number was different from the bike he was riding. “When he was asked to produce the original documents, a quarrel broke out,” the officer said.
While police claimed that Haroon was not attacked, the youth, with bandage on his hand, reached the station along with his friends, alleging that he was manhandled at the station on Thursday night. Later, he filed a complaint with the assistant commissioner to act against the SI.
In the second incident, a man was arrested after he and his wife allegedly attacked a policewoman at Guindy during a vehicle check on Thursday night.
Police identified the couple as Vikram Ram Moorthy and his wife Abinaya, who had gone to celebrate the latter’s birthday at a hotel in T Nagar. “The duo consumed alcohol and then went to the beach. As they reached Guindy on their way back, a patrol team on duty stopped the car and found the couple was drunk,” police said.
Whena the two were asked to get out of the car, they refused which led to a fight. In the melee, Abinaya allegedly attacked a woman police constable with car key, leaving her with injures near her eye. On Friday, police arrested Vikram, while Abinaya is absconding.
