Mentally ill minor from UP rescued and reunited with family
A 16-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh, who was not speaking and drowsy when rescuers picked him up from the Mylapore police station two months ago, was reunited with his family on Wednesday.

When the NGO called Banyan rescued Ram Narayan he was found to be a threat to those around and he was administered medication at a home for the mentally ill in the city. After constant enquiries, the boy spoke about how he arrived in the city to work and went missing.
Stating that the Sub Inspector of Police at Mylapore had referred Ram Narayan to them, Ratheesh of Banyan said, “At the time of admission, Ram refused to speak and he was drowsy for two days. He was put on a liquid diet. He remained aggressive and disturbed and was involved in inhibitive behaviour. He was, therefore, a threat to those around him.”
For almost a week he was very symptomatic. “He would react to the voices around him and fling objects at people or at the walls. After checking with doctors, we found out that he had psychosis.
He settled down post medication. But he refrained from speaking even then,” said another member of Banyan.
It was only after a lot of prodding that he spoke during a reintegration session. “We learnt that he was a native of Sonbhadra in UP. His brother had brought him to Chennai to work in a company in Ayanambakkam. He worked there for two months and stayed indoors for a month before he went missing. However, despite having his Aadhar card and contact details, his brother refrained from filing a police complaint as Ram was a minor who was brought to work here and that could land him in trouble,” he added.
“After much prodding, he told us that his parent’s name and we traced the family using those details and the help of local police in UP. He has now returned home and will continue his medication,” he stated.
