Visually impaired woman gives birth through IVF

Kaveri (38) and her husband Sathish Kumar D (38), like many other couples today, had been trying hard to conceive, but remained unsuccessful. While this is a factor we see among many couples today, what made this couple from Villupuram different is that they are both blind.

Having tried seeking the help of a number of In Vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics ever since they got married seven years ago, they finally landed up at a centre in the city as they could not bear the thought of being childless.

While visually impaired couples usually undergo IVF procedures through a donor’s egg in order to avoid complications in eyesight, this couple insisted on using their own, and gave birth to a baby boy - on July 8 - with no eyesight problems, making them the first visually impaired couple in the state to have a baby from their own egg and sperm.

Stating that careful antenatal care was given to them, the doctors at the Ishwarya Fertility Centre which helped the couple to deliver a healthy baby through LSCS (Lower Segment Cesarian Section), said that the baby weighed 3.12 kg when he was born.

“In May 2017, they had approached our centre seeking help to have a child of their own. Visually impaired couples giving birth to baby with a normal eye sight is very rare, since there are increased chances of transmitting blindness to the child from the mother due to multiple fibroid. However, in this case, Kaveri had successful conception through IVF,” said Dr Chandralekha, Director and Chief Consultant at the centre.

Expressing their joy, the couple said that it was their dream to have a baby and now that dream has become a reality.
