The Royapettah police team rushed to an ICICI ATM kiosk on Bharathi Salai after receiving an alert from the control room that somebody was trying to break open the ATM there.

The patrol team rushed to the spot and arrested a 19-year-old man, who was found busy trying to open the ATM machine with a screwdriver, not knowing that an alarm had went off at the bank’s headquarters in Mumbai, police officers noted.

Police said that the suspect Sheik Sulaiman Basha is a second-year college student and a resident of Zam Bazaar.

He first tried to open a Tamilnad Mercantile Bank’s ATM on Venkata Narayana Road in T Nagar.

The security guard there had gone to attend nature’s call when the suspect damaged the kiosk and the CCTV camera.

After his first attempt failed, he tried to break open the ATM in Royapettah, police added.

The police also said that Sheik was under the influence of alcohol when he attempted to break the ATM machines. He was remanded in judicial custody.
