It all started with two persons posing as officials from the CMDA approaching Pasupathi of Yadava Street, Virugambakkam. The officials sought to see all documents related to the construction of his house. After ‘scrutinising’ the document and checking the house, the officials told Pasupathi that there were violations in construction, which could attract a fine of Rs 2 lakh.

But the behaviour of the duo aroused suspicion in Pasupathi, and he asked them to show their identity cards. When Devarajan was taking out his ‘CMDA’ identity card, another ID card, from the Education Department, fell off his wallet. Both the cards had Devarajan’s photographs. However, in the CMDA card his name was mentioned as Chandrasekharan, while the Education Department card carried a different name – Senthil Kumar.

This alerted Pasupathi that the duo could be conmen. He then took the help of other local residents and confronted the two. The public overpowered the fraudsters and later handed them over to the Virugambakkam police.

Apart from fake ID cards, the two were also carrying fake CMDA bill books etc. Police are now trying to find out if the two had cheated anyone else posing as CMDA officials and collected money as ‘fine’ from gullible public.
