According to police, the victim, identified as Raja Karpage Brinda (28), was alone at home when a man knocked on the door on Tuesday afternoon. Her husband Kumaran, an employee of a private firm, was at work when the incident took place.

The man at the door claimed to be a Corporation employee, and told Brinda that he was there to inspect the water connection to see if the family had connected any additional motor to extract water without authorisation from the state utility, Metro Water Board. Believing him, Brinda took the man to the terrace to show the water tank. After a while, the man returned to the house and told her that the inspection has been completed.

Following this, he asked Brinda for some drinking water. As she was walking towards the kitchen to fetch water, the man snatched her gold chain and ran out. By the time she recovered from the shock and shouted for help, the man had escaped with the gold. According to sources, he disappeared with his aide who was waiting at the end of the street on a bike.

Police said the man was wearing a blue shirt and a black trouser. Based on Brinda’s complaint, police have registered a case and launched a hunt for the suspects. Police took the CCTV camera footages from the neighbourhood to identify the suspects. Further investigation is on.
