The frantic search for a prisoner missing from the remand prison at Puzhal ended in the wee hours of Saturday after a search team located him on the roof of the library building within the jail complex. The prisoner, Rajesh, had gone missing on Friday afternoon.

After being arrested nearly a week ago on charges filed by Shastri Nagar police under five IPC sections, including criminal intimidation, wrongful restrain, endangering personal safety of people, Rajesh was lodged in the prison on July 1.
On Friday, the jail authorities realised during roll call that there were only 1,542 inmates – one less than the actual number. As there was a brutal murder inside the prison recently, the first suspicion was whether this was another murder. The officials thus first searched if there were any body dumped in any corner of the premises. Jail sources said that they even considered a proposal to dig up certain areas inside the premises to make sure that the missing prisoner was not buried anywhere in case he was murdered.
Only after confirming that there was no murder did the officials look for clues of possible escape by the missing inmate. After a long search, the officials finally heaved a sigh of relief early on Saturday morning when they found Rajesh on the roof of the library building around 12.50 am.
“He climbed the building with a plan to escape. But after reaching there, he realised that there was no way further to escape,” a jail officer noted.
