According to police, Kalikumar (54) is the state secretary of Hanuman Sena and a functionary of Hindu Munnani. Accompanied by Gnanasekar, city secretary of the organisation, Kalikumar was travelling from Minjur to Tiruvallur on a car.

As per the complaint that they filed, two unidentified persons threw petrol bombs at the vehicle when it was on the Minjur-Vandalur Road. This was backed by a witness, a person named Ranjith (24), a passerby who claimed to have been in the vicinity when the attack happened.

Following alert, fire tenders from Red Hills rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Senior police officers including Tiruvallur Superintendent of Police R Sibi Chakravarthy inspected the spot and conducted inquiries.

However, this changed when Sholavaram police began investigations. While interrogating Kalikumar and Gnanasekar, the police team found their answers contradictory. When the duo was grilled further, they finally confessed that they staged a drama after setting the car on fire. Ranjith was also part of the plan, they admitted.

Police sources said Kalikumar used to have police protection, which was withdrawn recently. He resorted to the fake attack to prompt the police into returning the security blanket.

Sholavaram police arrested Kalikumar, Gnanakumar and Ranjith, and are investigating further.
