    Vandalur zoo to get incinerator, RO plant

    Heeding to the proposals put forth by senior officials of the Forest department, the state government has granted the nod to set up an incinerator and a reverse osmosis plant at the Aringar Anna Zoological park at Vandalur.

    This apart, the government has also sanctioned the department’s request to use funds for the upkeep of Vandalur zoo, Children’s Park in Guindy, Kurumbapatti Zoological Park in Salem and Amirthi Mini Zoo in Vellore. 

    The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden had pointed out the necessity for setting up these facilities in his recent communications to the government. 

    The animals that die inside Vandalur zoo due to various reasons including ageing and diseases are disposed of by burning in open cremation in the case of scheduled species, and buried if they are smaller non-scheduled animals, the letter said. Highlighting the risks in posed in terms of spreading the diseases and also unforeseen incidents like spreading of fire, the official moved the proposal to set up an electric incinerator, for which Rs 20 lakh has now been granted.  

    Also, Rs 25 lakh and been sanctioned for setting up a centralised RO plant within the zoo premises.
