Created by a student’s team from St Peter’s Institute of Higher Education and Research, the device named “S-Waist band” is built on micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS).

Dinesh, who led the team said, “The MEMS sensor is used to detect body motion and monitor the heart beats besides checking the blood pressure. Hence, whenever it detects abnormal body functioning, the device will send alerts to the registered phone numbers immediately.”

He added, “Apart from MEMS sensor, the QRS complex detection algorithm in the device can identify different heart functions while the wearer’s motion can be detected by the Arduino and Enrgia software.”

The device can also be used to send alerts to nearby hospitals, the makers said. “If hospital numbers are saved into the device, it can send alerts to them as well,” said Dinesh.
