    ‘Employability development programmes needed’

    Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K P Anbalagan said employability development programmes should be included in the higher studies curriculum for the students to get employment opportunities.

    During the 38th annual convocation of Anna University, the minister said that preparing students for employment alone is not enough. “A student should also fulfil the requirement of the society,” he said. 

    “The issue is not just about lack of employment opportunities in the world.” Quoting a communique issued by Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Anbalagan said Tamil Nadu is the number one state in research studies. 

    M K Surappa, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University said the university has streamlined the examination process and have enabled the students to monitor their progress using online platform. Surappa said that Anna University has signed MoUs with 15 foreign universities and eight Indian institutions. 

    “Nearly 1,800 research papers have been published during the academic year 2017-18, in internationally reputed journals,” he said. 

    During his address, chief guest P Balaram, former director, Indian Institution of Science, Bengaluru, said even when appointments are made in the universities, controversies and charges follow. 

    “More recently, poorly conceived expansion of our system of IITs central universities and research institutions has led to a resource crunch and shortage of competent faculty,” he said. 

    A total 1,304 PhD degree holders, who have completed their viva-voce examination on or before March 31, 2018 received the degrees in person from Tamil Nadu Governor and Chancellor of Anna University Banwarilal Purohit. As many as 64 ranks holders of full time BE/B.Tech/B. Arch degree programmes offered at university departments and affiliated colleges received the degrees and gold medals in person during the convocation.
