Eviction drive at Adambakkam lake begins
Four days after a public announcement was issued regarding the eviction of encroachments on Adambakkam lake and St Thomas Mount – Medavakkam road, Revenue officials on Monday started demolition of the structures built on encroached land on Monday.
Chennai
The eviction drive started with demolition of 24 buildings in the area that housed several shops. There are as many as 107 buildings that have dwellings and are expected to be demolished within next week, Revenue department sources said.
The encroachment became a major issue, as the neighbourhood didn’t have a proper drainage system and the sewage and other wastes were being dumped into the lake. The encroachments also created traffic congestion in the area. The authorities decided to remove the encroachments after the families were given houses built by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board in Semmencherry.
Following this, Revenue and PWD officials along with police force went to the spot and started the eviction drive by demolishing the shops. “Twenty-four shops were demolished on Monday. The families staying in 107 buildings are given a week’s time to vacate their houses and shift to the flats allotted to them in Semmencherry,” Revenue department officials said.
