The bullets used in self-loading rifles (SLR) were found in a two-tier AC coach of Thiruvananthapuram Mail when it reached Chennai Central around 9 am.

The cleaning staff who noticed the bullets under berth number 8 alerted railway police, who immediately retrieved them and held an inquiry. It was found that 15 army personnel, who had reached Chennai from Thiruvananthapuram to board another train to Howrah, missed the bullets in a hurry to catch the next train.

Police sources said Thiruvananthapuram Mail was delayed to reach Chennai and the army officers got in touch with railway officers to delay the Howrah-bound train by a few minutes so that they can board it, which the railway officials obliged. “They might not have noticed that they have dropped the bullets in the hurry. However, an inquiry has been ordered,” said the official.
