Role of burglars suspected in stray dogs killings

In the latest instance of brutality against animals reported in the city, four street dogs were allegedly poisoned, burnt and bludgeoned to death by unidentified persons at Neelankarai. Police have initiated a probe, including checking CCTV footage from the neighbourhood, as residents have raised concerns that it could be the handiwork of burglars.

Disturbed and concerned after four stray dogs were found killed in their neighbourhood, the local public have joined forces with the local police to hunt for those responsible for the brutality. The residents of Kabaleeshwarar Nagar Fourth Cross Street in Neelankarai have even formed a dedicated WhatsApp group to share information on the matter.

The police were alerted about the incident after an animal rights activist filed a complaint with the Neelankarai police station. Officers probing the case suspect the miscreants could have poisoned the dogs first; they burned one of them and also smashed the heads of two other dogs, possibly using heavy stones or clubs, before trying to bury them.

The carcasses that bear the signs of cruelty have now been sent to the Government Veterinary College for post-mortem examination. An FIR has been registered under Section 11 of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Section 429 of the IPC.

While police are browsing through the CCTV footage taken from the streets to trace the suspects, the residents fear that the killing could be the first step of a planned burglary, as street dogs are the first to alert the neighbourhood when a stranger enters the street.

However, police said the identity of the killers are not known yet, without which motives of this brutal act cannot be fixed. In the last reported case of cruelty against animals, 11 puppies were beaten to death by an inebriated 35-year-old man at a construction site at Anakaputhur in the last week of January.
