University sources said as the new students come with diverse thoughts, backgrounds and preparations, it is important to help them adjust to the new environment and inculcate in them the ethos of the institution, with a sense of larger purpose. Normal classes would start only after the induction programme is over. “We propose a threeweek long induction program for the UG students.

The purpose is to make the students feel comfortable in their new environment and open up, set a healthy daily routine, create bonding in the batch as well as between faculty and students, develop awareness, sensitivity and understanding of the self, people around and the society at large, and nature,” a senior professor said.

According to him, the programme period would be used to rectify some critical lacunas such as poor English comprehension.

The programme also include physical activity, creative arts, knowing universal human values, literary, proficiency modules, lectures by eminent persons, visits to local area and familiarisation of departments and branches’ innovation. Besides academic matters, the programme would involve a daily routine of physical activity with games and sports, which would help develop team work.

Each student should pick one game and learn it for three weeks. Similarly, every student would choose one skill related to visual or performing arts, including painting, sculpture, pottery, music and dance. There would also be literary activities that would encompass reading, writing and possibly debating and theatre.

After proficiency module and lecture session, students would visit the city landmarks (or a hospital or orphanage) to familiarise them with the area as well as expose them to the life of the underprivileged in the city.
