Based on the confession of Elamathi (33) of Thoothukudi, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar police recovered the gold jewels, weighing 12 sovereigns, from his aunt’s house in Sembium. Elamathi told police that he studied MBA at a university in Madurai in 2006 and is married to Sivakala. He stayed at the complainant, Arivazhagan’s house, paying Rs 3,900 as monthly rent. The owner stayed next door.
“As Elamathi was struggling to meet daily expenses with his salary, he stole the jewels kept at his landlord’s house when the latter was away. Arivazhagan went out to buy groceries without closing the front door and Elamathi sneaked into his house,” an officer said.
Police noted that when Elamathi informed his wife that he stole the jewels from the owner’s house, she scolded him and asked him to keep the valuables back in the cupboard. But when he back went to keep the gold, he found that Arivazhagan had already returned.
Panicked, Elamathi went to his aunt’s place and gave it to her saying that he would soon collect it back. When he returned, a police team was conducting an enquiry about the theft in Arivazhagan’s house.
Police personnel led by assistant commissioner G Harikumar and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar crime inspector Ramani, were questioning some of his neighbours about the theft. When they investigated Elamathi, he gave contradictory statements, said police sources.
“He was taken to the station and he confessed to the crime during the investigation. He claimed that it was the first time he stole,” a police officer said. However, police have collected his fingerprints to check if it matches with those lifted from scenes of crime in the recent past.
