Doctors spread awareness on renal transplant at RGGGH
At an awareness meet held at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on Monday, Nephrologists focussed on kidney transplantation as a treatment of choice for patients with end stage renal disease.
Chennai
Stressing on the fact that it offers patients improved quality of life and survival, and freedom from lifelong dialysis, doctors said that there are two types of Renal Transplantation – live transplantation and cadaveric kidney transplantation.
Highlighting the root for transplantation at the institute, they said that there was a shortage of organs donated and a long list of patients were waitlisted for transplantation. It was to bridge that gap that first cadaveric renal transplantation was started in 1995.
The hospital, until now, has performed 1,409 kidney transplants, of which 1,155 are live renal transplants and 254 cadaver transplants.
Last year, the hospital started doing donor nephrectomy through laparoscopic approach which is available only in a few private hospitals.
