In terms of weather, it was a mixed day for residents of Chennai and its suburbs on Friday as the sky was partly cloudy in the morning, but the temperature gradually increased as hours passed.

While Nungambakkam observatory recorded a maximum of 36.2 degrees Celsius, the airport registered 37 degrees Celsius.

A few places like Kancheepuram, Vaduvambakkam and Sunguvarchtram received mild rainfall accompanied by lightning.

When contacted, officials at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said, “There will be thunderstorm activities in suburbs for the next two days and temperature in Chennai city will remain between 36 and 37 degrees Celsius for two more days.”

With the southwest monsoon still remaining weak in the State, the easterlies are active in most parts of the northern region and this could cause thunderstorms, added the official.

“South and west interior Tamil Nadu are swept by Westerlies thereby minimising possibility of thunderstorm rain. However, northwest interior Tamil Nadu is still under the influence of easterlies, which can lead to thunderstorms in the evening,” a weather blogger said.

“Over the next couple of days, Chennai and adjoining parts are likely to see thunderstorms,” he noted.
