Coolest Kathiri in Chennai in last 14 years

According to weather experts, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 37.6 degree Celsius in Nungambakkam, while it was 39.2 in airport in April. 

“The city last experienced below 40 degrees Celsius in 2004,” said a Duty Officer at RMC. Last year the state capital recorded 42.6 degree Celsius in Nungambakkam during the same period.

“During every Kathiri, there will be mild thunderstorm activities in the city,” said a weather expert.

However, Chennai did not get a single drop of rain during the peak summer this year, while southern and western parts of the state received moderate to heavy rains, he added.

RMC has issued a bulletin stating that thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds is likely to occur at isolated places over interior Tamil Nadu for the next two days. According to local forecast (Chennai region), the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy, with maximum and minimum temperatures to be around 36 and 28 degrees Celsius for the next 48 hours.

K Srikanth, a city-based weather blogger said, “Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu during next 24 hours.”

Moreover, it is likely to become favourable for further advancement of southwest monsoon into interior parts of Kerala, some areas of coastal and interior Karnataka and some regions of Tamil Nadu during next two to three days, he added.
