Chain snatchers go on a spree, 5 cases in single day
While police are struggling to nab the chain snatchers even after releasing the CCTV footage in connection with three incidents in Kodambakkam, K K Nagar and Virugambakkam, reported a week ago, gangs have struck again in the same localities and robbed about 53 sovereigns from five women on Sunday morning in a span of a few hours.

A 62-year-old woman was relieved of her 12-sovereign chain when she was walking to the Tirumala temple on Venkatnarayana Road in T Nagar. The victim, Srimathi (62), a resident of Coats Road, was on her way to the temple around 7.45 am, when a bikeborne duo followed her and snatched her chain at Srinivasa Road and escaped. According to the victim, the rider was wearing helmet and the pillion rider had covered his face with a handkerchief.
Within 30 minutes of the incident, a 12-sovereign chain was robbed from another woman when she was walking along with her husband near her house. Vasundra (61) of Samiyar Thottam was walking towards the Corporation park, when two men on a bike followed her and snatched her gold chain and fled the spot.
Around 8.45 am, yet another chain snatching was reported in Virugambakkam, where a 61-year-old woman was relieved of her 10-sovereign chain. Fathima Mary of Vivekanandar Street was on her way to the fish market and when she crossed the West Vanniyar street, two men on a bike snatched her chain and escaped.
In Valasaravakkam too a woman lost nine sovereigns to chain snatchers around 9.15 am. The victim, S Shanthakumari (67) of Kancheepuram, had come to her relative’s house at Krishnamacharya Nagar. The incident happened when she was walking towards the house.
Valasaravakkam police have retrieved CCTV footage from the street.
Meanwhile, another chain snatching incident has been reported in Tirumangalam, in which an elderly woman was relieved of her five sovereigns of gold. V Jessie Manogara (75), resident of Vasantham Colony in Thirumangalam, was on her way to the nearby church, when the robbery happened.
There was one similarity in all the snatchings - the rider wore a helmet and the pillion rider had his face covered.
T Nagar Deputy Commissioner of Police P Aravindan told DT Next that two special teams have been formed to nab the snatchers and they would be arrested soon.
