From Sunday, get to ride 163-yr-old train from Egmore

Chennaiites who love to travel by heritage trains are just a couple of days away from boarding one. This time they won’t have to travel all the way to Nilgiris for the experience. The train will be available from Egmore station itself. Southern Railway (SR) has offered the 163-year-old steam locomotive, EIR-21, to haul a 40-seat air-conditioned coach from Egmore to Kodambakkam on Sunday.

The 1855 built steam locomotive’s maiden journey will commence at 10 am from Egmore and will be approximately 30 minute long. Tickets, priced at Rs 650 per adult and Rs 500 per child, would be available on a first-come-first-serve basis from the Egmore station, said chief commercial manager of SR, Priyamvada Viswanathan. SR has planned to issue a certificate appreciating each passenger. When asked about the possibility of extending the trip beyond Kodambakkam, Viswanathan, who said that they have been ready for the commercial run of the steam locomotive since January 26 when the engine made its annual customary run, said, “Once watered, the locomotive can haul up to Kodambakkam from Egmore. To extend it, it will require re-watering, which will take another 30 minutes. It is not possible to do so now. We have to operate the train without affecting the regular train service on the route,” she added during an interaction with media persons in the city.

Passenger reservation counters to double up
The chief commercial manager, revealed that the passenger reservation system (PRS) and unreserved ticket counters (UTS) would double up based on requirements from now on. In simple terms, an unreserved ticket counter at Moore Market Complex (MMC) would double up as a PRS counter and issue reserve tickets if the demand for reserved tickets are high at a given time. PRS counters would do the same for unreserved tickets based on the need, she added. The idea was mooted to meet public requirement and reduce the waiting time of people turning up to book tickets be it for reserved or unreserved ones.
