Airport-Central Metro line launch: Minister inspects arrangements

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) could open the Nehru Park – Chennai Central and Saidapet – DMS section for public use in a week. If sources in the government are to be believed, CMRL could throw open the two stretches, which would connect Chennai Central and a large part of Anna Salai to Airport on May 29.

Though the Chennai Metro Rail Limited officials refused to confirm the date of inauguration and offered to publicise the same on Wednesday, sources said the inauguration would happen in a week’s time at Egmore metro station, possibly around May 29 when the state Assembly is in session.

The venue could be confirmed, courtesy a reticent CMRL, which released photographs of state Industries Minister MC Sampath, who on Tuesday inspected the arrangements at Egmore metro station for the inauguration of passenger service from Nehru Park to Central and Little Mount to AG-DMS.

Accompanied by photographs, the statement from CMRL also said the Minister had discussed preparations for the grand inauguration with managing director PK Bansal among CMRL officials. Commissioner of metro rail safety, southern circle, Bengaluru KA Manoharan has been inspecting the two sections since last week.

The CMRL expects to increase its patronage by commissioning the Airport – Central and Airport - DMS section, which has been one of major missing links of the city’s maiden metro network.
