The Pammal town panchayat consists of 21 wards with around a lakh people living there. According to panchayat officials, the area needs 90 lakh litres of water every day but the residents are getting only 20 lakh litres.

The residents of Anna Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Muthamzhil Nagar, Moongil Eri, Shankar Nagar and Signal office suffer the most without proper water supply.

Locals told DT Next that they depend on tankers, which come in every evening, for their drinking water needs. “We are all working and after returning from office, we have to stand in a long queue. But the wait often gets delayed,” said Suseela, a resident of Anna Nagar. When contacted, town panchayat officials claimed that the problem would be solved by next summer as they plan to bring water from the Chembarabakkam lake.

There is also a proposal to build four overhead water tanks to store the water.

Pammal town panchayat Municipal Engineer Saravana Kumar said, “We are not getting enough water to supply through pipes so we are supplying it to one ward per day.

Commenting on sewage mixing with the piped water, Kumar said, “Pipes were laid about 30 years ago and they might be broken in places leading to sewage getting mixed with water. We have plans to replace the pipes entirely and the work has also begun.”
