According to weathermen, thunderstorms usually take place in the interior districts and interestingly, some of the most intense thunderstorms are experienced right before the onset of Southwest monsoon.
Even Saturday witnessed intense evening thunderstorms in parts of Vellore, Salem, Dharmapuri, Erode and Krishnagiri districts, along with adjoining parts of Rayalaseema and South interior Karnataka.
“Looking at the wind charts, it appears that the hotspots for thunderstorms are likely to be the same areas, i.e. the interior Tamil Nadu,” said a weatherman at RMC. “There is a possibility that some places in Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Karur and Perambalur may also see moderate thunderstorms in two days,” he added.
K Srikanth, a city-based weather blogger said, “Over the Central Arabian sea, we can see a low-pressure evolving, which may develop into a cyclone. Also, an Upper air cyclonic circulation has been developing that could become a low-pressure area triggering the bay onset.”
But, there is no immediate relief for Chennaiites as the temperature in the city will remain between 35 and 36 degrees Celsius for two more days. Chennai Nungambakkam and airport observatories recorded maximum temperature of 35.8 and 37.1 degree Celsius on Sunday.
