Companies conduct blood donation camps to help hospitals this summer

With hospitals and blood banks facing a shortage of voluntary blood donations due to the summer vacations, some companies are taking an initiative to organise blood donation camps in the city. Vijay Raja, a construction firm on Sunday organised one such camp in Velammal Vidhayalaya in Sholinganallur on Sunday.

Stating that it is extremely challenging to find donors now, Karthikeyan G, Asst Manager, of the Marketing Department of the company, said, “While we had decided to conduct a blood donation camp as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity, it is only over the course of our planning that we realised the challenges involved in arranging donors. In the case of emergencies, arranging blood is far easier.”

While most hospitals conduct camps throughout the year, they also collect blood through voluntary blood donations. However, it becomes difficult during the

    vacations.

“Other companies too must take up such initiatives to help hospitals collect blood,” said a doctor attached to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH).

The camp that was held on Sunday, was done in partnership with Chennai Red Night, a blood donation organisation and a 25-member medical team from RGGGH. “There were around 30 donors at the camp. While we organise other programmes as part of our CSR activity, this is the first time we are organising a blood donation camp.

We are planning to hold more of such programmes. Considering the fact that every summer, hospitals and private blood banks struggle to get donors, we decided to help in the best way that we can,” added Karthikeyan.

Last week, an IT company conducted a blood donation camp as part of its CSR activity and received blood from around 20 donors.
