Statistics claim that over 12 lakh patients die due of heart attack in the country every year. Stating that seven crore people are suffering from heart related disease, Dr C Moorthy of the cardiology Department at the Hospital said.

“The figures are increasing every year by 15 lakh and the number of youngsters suffering from heart related diseases is also increasing drastically.” The programme aimed at educating those present at the hospital on the importance of detecting heart attacks early, thereby escaping from eventualities, he said.

Stressing on the importance of getting diagnosed within the golden hour, he said, “Patients need to realise the importance of rushing to the hospital in the first four hours. The earlier they reach, the better are the outcomes.”

“Nowadays, in the state, especially at RGGGH, we administer the TNK or Thrombolytic Therapy drug to the patient, which clears the block, following which we do an angiogram. The injection is available for free round the clock and helps us save lives,” he said, adding that it was administered on a 17-year-old boy recently, who was brought to the hospital within the first hour of the attack.
