When Arulpriya Senthilkumar, CEO, of Namma Boomi tried to convince shopkeepers to stop giving plastic covers to customers, she realised they weren’t keen on foregoing the business that linked to these carry bags. Soon, however, she convinced them to switch to bio-degradable options like cloth. The whole exercise triggered the idea of coming up with bio-degradable bags for all purposes.

Thus was formed My Care Bag that was launched a few months ago, a 100 per cent cotton bag, which has found patrons among buyers who are opting for the cloth bags. She says, “It was received well, and I had a huge order for Navarathri when people were gifting it to the visitors.”

At a cost of Rs 50 for the big ones and Rs 10-15 for smaller ones, the variety of bags offered by Namma Boomi also include milk bags that are meant for collecting milk in the mornings, and fridge bags for storing vegetables and fruit and thambulam bags. Arulpriya adds, “The bags are made using the warp technique in power loom by a self-help group in Erode.”

The next initiative by Namma Boomi is to popularise cloth sanitary napkins and silicon menstrual cups. She says,” The napkins used commonly not just clog the drains but are also detrimental to the environment.”
