Dr Harish said in his complaint that he received a call on Tuesday demanding Rs 1 lakh. This was subsequently reduced to half, but only after a bargain when the dentist said he could not arrange the amount.
In between, when the doctor asked the caller why he should pay up,the caller replied it was a norm to collect protection money. “Once you pay Rs. 50,000, you will not be troubled. And if you have any problem, you may contact me on my private number,” the caller said, according to the audio clip recorded by the doctor. The caller said he went by an ‘ethical code and would keep his word’. In the audio clip, the caller explained the kind of expenses incurred by him and the efforts taken to zero in on the doctor. He also warned the doctor that police would not be able to track and trace him and the gang.
The caller then advised the doctor against putting the life of a family member in peril by informing the police.
