Fans get a ‘sportive’ club in city

Though the city has had a vibrant community of sports lovers, there has existed a vacuum for fans of different teams – be it cricket, football or any sport – to get together, cheer as one and find like-minded friends through fandom.

Recognising this, KS Divakar, who founded Sportwalk – a sport-based media, merchandise and event company, has come up with a first-of-its-kind initiative.

Set in Chennai and running from April 28 to May 6, ‘Highlights’ sports fan fest aims to help sporting aficionados find others through a series of events. From Whistle Podu and Tennis fan fest to events for football fans of Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Barcelona, there is something for everyone.

“We had held a few events before since last year called ‘Huddles’ on topics such as The Ashes, Rahul Dravid and so on. We held quizzes, played documentaries and even launched a book and the response was great. The feedback from audiences requesting football-based events was high, so the Highlights fan fest was conceptualised,” said Divakar.

The events will have screenings of live games as well as interactive platforms for fans.  With over 1,000 people expected to be part of the project, Divakar is also excited about the future potential for his idea. “We want to expand this to the likes of Bengaluru and Kochi next,” he added.  N Ramesh, a footballer who is attending the events, said that the city needs more such ideas for Chennai to progress further as a sporting city.
