The party workers held a rally from Little Mount to Saidapet and shouted slogans demanding Centre to recall Governor Banwarilal Purohit and withdraw the one-man probe committee headed by retired civil servant Santhanam, who will probe the scandal, in which Nirmala Devi, an assistant professor of a private college in Aruppukottai was arrested in a bid to lure women students for sexual favours to the higher-ups in the MKU. The cadres also demanded that the government case be transferred to CBI.

Addressing reporters, G Ramakrishnan, Politburo member, said, “The Governor is depriving state’s rights. So, he should be recalled. Even the autonomy of state has been affected and the Governor is violating Constitutional rights.” Later, around 200 cadres tried to lay siege to the Raj Bhavan, however they were arrested by police.

Earlier, state secretary of CPM K Balakrishnan in a statement said that the Governor voluntarily conducted a presser over the Nirmala Devi case and formed a one-man committee on his own. He also unnecessarily patted on cheek of a woman journalist. “His entire activities are in a bad taste and the Centre should withdraw him immediately,” he noted.
