SSI hangs self, third suicide in two months
In yet another suicide of uniformed men in the city, a special sub-inspector (SSI) attached to Korukkupet police station was found hanging from a tree near Kasimedu on Monday night. He had only two more years left in service, official sources said.
Chennai
This is the latest in a string of suicides by police personnel and comes a little over a month after two police in the city committed suicide by shooting themselves using service weapon within a gap of three days.Â
The policeman was identified as T Joseph (56), a resident of Tondiarpet police quarters, who was posted on night shift on Monday. He left home after informing his wife but didn’t report for duty.Â
His body was found hanging in a tree by a few fishermen who went to the Kasimedu beach to dry their catch in the wee hours of Tuesday. They immediately alerted Kasimedu harbour police, who rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Stanley Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.Â
Police sources said that he was in plain clothes with his wrist watch and footwear intact. Joseph, a native of Tirunelveli district, is survived by wife Shanthi and two daughters, Anitha and Jensi.Â
Korukkupet inspector Ravikumar said that Joseph’s family stated in their complaint that he had prolonged pain in his legs ever since he met with an accident a few years ago. Besides this, they added, he had no other problem.Â
Joseph’s colleagues recalled him as a good person and straightforward as a police officer. It may be noted that he took the extreme step just two years ahead of his retirement.Â
Taking a serious note of the personnel taking their own lives, the senior officers of the city police had decided to offer counselling for the personnel. In addition, as there were a number of complaints from the lower level officers, the state police had held a mega grievance camps to address their complaints.Â
Since April 2017, as many as 21 police personnel committed suicide in the state, according to sources.Â
