Perungalathur lacks proper bus stand, commuters suffer
Although it is referred to as the ‘mini Koyambedu’ with all buses bound for southern districts making a stop here, Perungalathur on the GST road does not have a proper bus stand.
Chennai
Perungalathur, located in the southern suburbs, often sees a huge traffic logjam as thousands of commuters take the buses to reach the city daily. Yet, they are a hassled lot as there is not even have a proper bus alighting point. The situation becomes worse in the night due to poor lighting.
Due to the absence of a shed, commuters are forced to wait under the hot sun to board the bus. Meena, a college student from Perungalathur, said, “There is no proper bus stop for us. Bus drivers stop at their convenience making it difficult for us to board the vehicles.” Residents point out to the presence of an old bus stop built a few years ago. “But it is totally useless as it is located at the signal. Buses do not stop there. We still don’t know why it is not being demolished as it affects the traffic a lot,” Meena said.
Jeeva, another resident of Perungalathur, said, “We have to stand under the hot sun to board the bus. There is no shelter making it extremely difficult for us during summer. Due to the absence of a dedicated alighting point, commuters including the elderly have to run around to board the bus which stops at will.”
When contacted, Shantha Jayakumar, Executive Officer (EO), Peerkankaranai town Panchayat, said, “We are aware that there is no shelter at the bus stop. We have given a notice regarding the same to the National Highways seeking their permission to build one. We will provide a temporary shed for now,” she said.
