    Senior railway official sentenced to two years in jail for corruption

    A senior engineer of Southern Railway (SR) was awarded two-year jail term by a Central Bureau of Investigation court here in connection with a corruption case booked against him in 2014.

    Convicting the senior section engineer (SSE) on Friday, CBI special judge A Thiruneela Prasad also slapped a fine of Rs 30,000 on him. 

    The Anti-Corruption Branch of CBI, Chennai, had registered a case against Thotta Sivakumar, SSE of permanent way, office of the deputy chief engineer, construction, Southern Railway Park Town, Chennai, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA),1988. He had allegedly demanded Rs 15,000 from person for taking the measurement of the work the person executed, and for recording it in the measurement book to enable the contractor to raise the bill. 

    According to sources, a trap was laid following complaint from the person, and Thotta Sivakumar was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs 15,000 from the complainant. A charge sheet was filed against Sivakumar by CBI. On completion of trial, the special judge convicted Sivakumar on Friday and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years apart from paying the fine.
