The incident had occurred when Dr Amudha was alone at her Mint Clinic in her two-storey building. The accused, Janakiraman, approached her in the guise of consultation for his wife’s ailment and suddenly snatched the doctor’s chain and tried to escape. Surya, apprenticing at a four-wheeler mechanic shop, on seeing Janakiraman running out of the clinic, chased and caught him. The culprit was later handed over to the police. To felicitate Surya’s bravery, City Police Commissioner, AK Viswanathan invited him to his office on Thursday and presented him with a gift.

Later, Surya told media persons that whatever he did was on the spur of the moment and recalled that none of the onlookers made any effort to chase or catch the offender. “It was then that I started chasing the chain-snatcher. I hit him hard on the head after which he collapsed,” Surya narrated.

The boy, a Class 8 dropout, started undergoing training in air-conditioner repair and servicing. Now, he is learning four-wheeler servicing at a garage opposite Dr Arumugam’s clinic.

Soon after the incident, the doctor and her husband on Tuesday went to Surya’s house in Tirumangalam and thanked his parents Narayanan, a tailor, and his wife Chellammal for their son’s brave act.

Surya is Narayanan’s youngest child, while his first two daughters are graduates.

Narayanan said his son was a brave boy and never hesitated to stand up for what is right. His only cause for concern was Surya failed to complete his education.

Additional Commissioner (South) MC Sarangan, Additional Commissioner (North) HM Jayaram and Joint Commissioner (East) TS Anbu were also present along with Viswanathan to commend Surya for his bravery.
