The suspect introduced himself to the job aspirants as Karthik, claiming to be an HR manager of a reputed IT firm in Bengaluru. He made acquaintances by creating WhatsApp groups for job seekers and wooed them on the promise that they can earn up to Rs 15,000 by doing data entry work from home. He received Rs 4,100 from each, assuring that they would be provided a laptop for the job.

R Vignesh, a final year ME student who got introduced to Karthik through a friend in November, paid the money and introduced 30 more people to the group. “Karthik even conducted a training session for them at a hotel in Koyambedu in February and issued ID cards and offer letters with the IT firm’s logo after collecting the copies of all their bank and educational documents,” said police.

However, when he failed to provide laptops as promised, aspirants started questioning him, following which Karthik switched off his phone last week and remains untraceable. The duped youth found out that Karthik had been managing several such WhatsApp groups, and suspect that he could have cheated over 1,000 people. So far, about 300 victims have come together to file a petition at the Commissionerate on Wednesday. The city police have reportedly asked them to come on Monday for investigation.
