Women ride 6,000 km to promote safety

A journey of 6,000 km from Daman began for the group – called the ‘Ladies of Harley’ — earlier this month, and currently, they are in Chennai to bond with the biking community in town that is welcoming them with open arms.

7 women from all over India have come together with a mission – to show the rest of the world that India is safe for women, in the wake of the tarnished public image that the country has been sporting in the recent past. How? By being the first women in India to navigate their way through the Golden Quadrilateral (the highway network connecting many industrial and agricultural centres) – with Harley Davidson bikes, no less.

“We are Harley owners from all over India, and this was an initiative planned to dispel the notion that women can’t travel in our country alone. Whenever we connect with other women bikers overseas, they are surprised to know that Indian women bike. Breaking that perception was our prerogative,” said Director of LOH, Sunita Kunjeer who is leading the women on the ride.

They are of all ages – with the oldest being 48 and the youngest 23 – but that hasn’t stopped them from bonding. “I’m having such a blast riding with my ‘family’ as I refer to them. Apart from the camaraderie on the road, we are having so much fun at the stopovers all over India – when not only Harley Davidson owners, but other biking community members are going all to welcome and party with us. We are meeting people of all age groups from different walks of life,” said Anushriya Gulati from Dehradun, who is the youngest rider.
