However, sources said the AC submitted a letter to the directorate on Saturday claiming that the money was meant for the PG medical admission of his son.

Based on a tip-off about a deal to pay the Assistant Commissioner about Rs 8 lakh to settle a land dispute, a team of DVAC officials led by DSP Lava Kumar were keeping a vigil on the station. Sources said Kamil Basha returned to the station around 10 pm after attending a bandobast duty, following which realtor Selvam of Korattur too entered the station premises.

When the DVAC team barged in and conducted a search, they found the Assistant Commissioner was in possession of Rs 2.5 lakh cash. During the interrogation, the officer reportedly told the DVAC team that his friend Selvam, gave him the cash. After interrogating Selvam, Rs 2.58 lakh was seized from him as he also failed to offer a proper explanation for the source of the cash.

After the investigation, Kamil Basha was asked to submit a written explanation for the unaccounted cash by Saturday afternoon.

In his letter, Kamil Basha has reportedly stated that he sold one of his properties to get PG medical admission for his son (who is a doctor) and the seized money was an advance received for the sold property.

Kamil Basha, who retires next year, has already been in the centre of controversies in the past.

When he was an inspector in Red Hills, he was charged of working in connivance with red sander smugglers, leading to his transfer to the control room. Incidentally, DSP Lava Kumar, who led the raid, had earlier worked under Kamil Basha, said sources.
