Though it is routine on part of the corporation to increase services to such spotsduring summer holidays, a considered decision had to be taken this time in view of increased protests in the state, officials said.

“For instance, we operate additional buses to Marina beach each year during summer till 2017. However, as the place is already a protest venue, we need to consult the police before taking a decision,” an official said seeking anonymity. The official exuded hope that the MTC would be able to augment services to places like Anna Square, Mamallapuram, Guindy Park and Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur.

Around 20 extra services per day would be operated to each spot and such buses would be operated to main depots like Koyambedu, Vadapalani, Adyar, Thiruninravur and Avadi, he added. A senior MTC official, on condition of anonymity, said, “We are expecting high patronage after April 20, as examinations will be over. Further, we will reduce services on some routes, where there will be low patronage during summer.”

The authorities would hold a ‘summer’ meeting to decide the specifics like the number of buses to each destination, the official added.

However, union leaders remained skeptical. K Anbazhagan, joint secretary, Nethaji Transport Workers Union, said, “Five years ago, the corporation operated special services to such spots during summer which evoked good response from the passengers. However, the corporation gradually reduced services, citing poor revenue.” He said the corporation should operate buses to such tourist spots which could rake in profits.
