Farmers can’t be allowed to protest for 90 days on Marina
In response to the 90 days sought by farmer leader P Ayyakannu to stage a fast on the Marina to protest against the failure of the Centre in establishing the Cauvery Management Board, the State has told the Madras HC that it is ready to give permission provided the petitioner is willing to protest in select places such as Chepauk Guest House and Valluvar Kottam and that too for just five days.

Recording the submission made by Additional Advocate General (AAG) PH Arvind Pandian in this regard on Friday, Justice T Raja directed the AAG to file an affidavit about the stipulations on the protest and posted the case for further hearing to April 17.
It may be noted that during the earlier hearing, the judge had sought Ayyakannu’s counsel to advise his client from not resorting to naked protests, as he did in Delhi recently. Ayyakannu had submitted that the Cauvery management board is a long pending demand of Tamil Nadu and despite the Supreme Court directing the Centre to constitute a scheme for management of Cauvery water within 45 days, it has failed to constitute the board.
Hence, demanding immediate constitution of the board it has been planned to stage hunger strike and since Chennai does not have a vast ground to organize such an event, Marina has been selected as the venue for the protest, Ayyakannu said.
