Smart City: Report on T Nagar's uninterrupted water supply complete

According to the parameters that constitute a “Smart City”, 24x7 water supply, underground sewage network, better walkability structures and smart traffic management take top priority. Yet, the focus has been on retrofitting parks and redesigning roads till now. However, Corporation sources reveal that there may be some headway in tackling T-Nagar’s more “basic yet crucial” amenities.

A senior corporation official said, “The DPR for the uninterrupted supply of water is complete while there is an in-depth study on how to efficiently dispose of sewage. Following this, there will be a round of scrutiny. Once approved, Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) and Smart City Board should give their nod for implementation.”

The city, which has been facing a water shortage most summers, will also see the introduction of a smart metering system. Under the Pan City initiative of Smart City, the high-level committee approved the installation of automatic meter reading (AMR) equipment with a wireless data collection system in two phases, with the initial stage witnessing the installation of the AMR systems in 12,708 intensive consumer connections (using more than 500 kilolitres per month).

The committee also approved the installation of 251 electromagnetic flow meters in the city’s five water supply reservoirs, five treatment plants and two desalination plants, in addition to several zonal and ward level pumping stations to ensure better planning of water supply and early detection of leakages through the system.
