Doctors remove 10cm tumour from 36-year-old’s throat
A 36-year-old woman, who had trouble swallowing due to a tumour in her throat, was successfully operated upon by a team of doctors at the Government Stanley Medical College hospital.
Chennai
The patient Radhi from Arani, who is speech and hearing impaired, came to the hospital with complaints of snoring and difficulty in swallowing. Scans revealed a 10cm tumour in the left parapharyngeal space. It took a team of experts about three hours to remove the tumour in a surgery–reportedly the first time in the world that such a huge mass was removed transorally, said doctors.
The woman had trouble swallowing for the past six months and was admitted to the ENT ward at the hospital in December. Following evaluation by the department doctors, a smooth firm bulge was identified in her throat, doctors at the hospital said. In the MRI scan, a 10x5x4 cm soft tissue swelling was found in the left parapharyngeal space, which was slowly displacing the blood vessels to the brain.
Considering the risks involved, an expert team was formed. After a three-hour long surgery, she was observed post operatively for a month and has now been declared fully recovered.
