Buses to Adyar, Kalpakkam, Mahabalipuram, Kovalam, Chengalpattu and other destinations are operated from Thiruporur. More than 25,000 passengers visit the bus stand every day.
But, members of the public say private minivans and share autos compete with the MTC buses. The ensuing situation creates heavy traffic in the area, especially from 7 to 11 AM in the mornings and 5 to 9 PM in the evenings. With the bus bays occupied by other vehicles, MTC buses are forced to stop at a considerable distance away from the bay and some buses doesn’t even stop, commuters claim.
Mahalakshmi, IT professional, said, “Every morning, the stand is fully occupied by private vans and share autos who do not make way for MTC buses. It is very difficult to board the bus.” Commuters demand police take action and seizure of private vehicles which are blocking the bus bays.
While contacted, a senior police official, concurred with the commuters and said that they were doing their best to regulate the traffic. “The main problem is that we don’t have enough number of cops. We have asked for additional staff strength and they should arrive soon,” he said.
