CMBT to get improved Wi-Fi network
Much to passengers’ delight, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority will again begin Wi-Fi services in the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT).
Chennai
Officials from CMDA, who maintain the bus terminus, said that they had launched the facility in 2015, but it had evoked poor response owing to lack of awareness. Hence they withdrew the service. However, this time, officials said they would campaign in a better manner and thus spread the word among the lakhs of passengers availing of bus services from the terminus every day. They also said that the service is already available in railway stations and other bus stands across the state. Â
“We are in the process of identifying places where such network will be easily accessible. Subsequently, we must check signals and based on the response, we will expand the services,” said an official, seeking anonymity.Â
Daniel Robinson, programme manager, Chennai City Connect, welcomed the move. “The CMBT is gradually attracting more number of passengers. Further, the Wi-Fi service will be a shot in the armÂ
for passengers who can use it to garner whatever information they want at the terminus,” he said, adding, the facility should be extended to main depots across the city.Â
Passengers are happy about the move. “We are living in the digital age and most people use smart phones. The Wi-Fi facility will definitely be a boon,” said S Philip, a private firm executive, who travels thrice in a week from CMBT.Â
When contacted, a CMDA official, in-charge for CMBT, said, “Since we had earlier set up the facility, it would be easier for us to fix the Wi-Fi at identified spots. To create awareness among commuters, posters and hoardings will also be in place.” He also said that the Wi-Fi would be available in more than 15 places in CMBT premises.
