City school functioning without recognition since 2010, says PIL

The school, managed by the Thiru Vi Ka Dr Mu Va Educational Trust since 1995, was functioning without recognition since 2010, alleged a public interest litigation that came up for hearing on Wednesday. 

According to the petitioner  V Manimaran, he came to know  that the school was functioning  without recognition from a headmaster who had retired from the  institution. Also, in the reply to a query he raised under an RTI application, the Chief Educational Officer, Chennai, said the school was functioning without requisite government approval, he added. 

In its counter affidavit, the Greater Chennai City Corporation submitted on Wednesday that the school was illegally occupying more than seven acres of land owned by the civic body, and owed it Rs 1.89 crore towards lease rent default. Despite eviction notices issued by the city corporation, the school continued to occupy and use the property by running a tennis training centre and a computer facility on commercial basis, sources said. 

In 2016, the Supreme Court had dismissed a plea moved by the school challenging the actions of the Corporation. Recording the submissions, the first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice A Selvam posted the plea to April 13 for further hearing.
