As part of the procedure, the patients were given an injection (zoledronic acid) to decrease the bone destruction. After three weeks, they underwent a surgery where the bone is filled with fibula from the patient’s leg. The leg was immobilised in a mould of plaster of paris and the leg was gradually put into use.

Dr Jayanthi added that the patients have recovered well and crossed one and a half years after the procedure. The treatment was done by the experts at the Institute of Orthopaedics for the patients who had been referred from private and government practices in the districts.

The condition that affects the thigh bone or the leg bone occurs mostly in the age group of 20-40 —the most productive age group. The cancer like condition can rapidly progress and destroy the affected bone, without treatment. It usually causes pain and difficulty in using the affected leg, making it more prone to fracture. The procedure ideally costs above Rs 1.5 lakh for a custom prosthesis, according to experts.
