Auto driver returns suitcase with Rs 1.5 lakh and cheques to passenger
An auto rickshaw driver pleasantly surprised police and an aged commuter when he returned an unlocked suitcase, containing Rs 1.5 lakh and cheques worth Rs 3 lakh. The suitcase was left behind by the passenger, who then lodged a complaint with the Anna Salai police on Tuesday.

“It was not the auto driver who went with the suitcase, but the passenger who left it behind. The passenger, a businessman from Choolai, had checked into a hotel off Anna Salai. He went out from hotel to meet someone in an auto-rickshaw. After reaching the destination, he had asked the auto driver to wait for him to return. He had left the suitcase in the auto,” police said.
When he came out, the businessman reportedly failed to identify the auto on which he came, and took another auto to return to the hotel. Only after reaching the hotel did he remember about the suitcase and lodged a complaint with the police. However, police could not trace registration number of auto despite combing through the CCTV footage.
Meanwhile, auto driver Velu kept waiting in the place where he had dropped him. Four hours later, the passenger was not to be found, and he was left with a suitcase. So Velu returned to the hotel from where he picked up his customer.
At the hotel he found the police team already probing about the auto rickshaw and the driver. Velu then narrated the entire incident to the police and his customer. The businessman agreed the fact that he could not remember in which auto rickshaw he went. Then Velu handed over the suitcase to him, who verified and said everything – cash and cheque – were intact, police said.
“The auto driver had not even bothered to open it. His honesty should be appreciated,” police said.
