Anna University set to get new VC, at last
With interview formalities having been completed, Anna University is all set to get its new Vice-Chancellor in a day or two.
Chennai
University sources said on Sunday that the interview took place at Raj Bhavan the day before and the committee has submitted all required reports. Anna University has been functioning without a Vice-Chancellor for almost two years.
Sources further said that the interview committee members scrutinised more than 150 applicants out of which five people were short-listed. “Out of the five, one was selected for the post and he would be officially appointed this week,” one of the sources said. Rajaram was the previous Vice-Chancellor of the University, who completed his tenure in May 2016. Since then all day-to-day work was maintained by senior professors of the university.
The three-member interview panel included Sunil Paliwal, secretary, Higher Education, K Vivekanandan, director of technical education and TV Geetha from College of Engineering, Guindy. Paliwal is also a member of the university syndicate.
Last May, the Tamil Nadu government had amended existing rules governing the appoint of vice-chancellors in universities of the state and the constitution of a search committee. The required qualifications for Vice-Chancellor were someone who was a noted academician, with 10 years service in either a State or Central educational institution or equivalent to the post of a director or chief official in equivalent educational institution.
Faculty bodies demand transparency in University posts
The Tamil Nadu Federation of University Faculty Association (TANFUFA) and Joint Action Council of College Teachers Tamil Nadu (JAC) on Sunday demanded that corruption be completely eradicated in the appointment of university officials and transparency be maintained while selecting candidates.
“Transparency in appointments of university officials, including VC, faculty and staff shall be followed by publishing minutes of committee meetings, list of candidates and reasons for short-listing the selection,” both the bodies announced in a seminar on higher education and corruption.
JAC Convenor Dr R Dhamotharan demanded official enquiry into all VCs charged with corruption, those responsible for selection of these officials, recent appointment of faculty members and financial expenditures during their tenures.
