M Prema was out for a walk when two miscreants on a bike snatched her chain. She fell down and sustained injuries, the police said.

In her complaint, she said she had moved to a side on seeing the bike. She said a man walking towards her snatched the chain, hopped on the bike’s pillion and escaped. She stated that it all happened in a flash, and the duo fled the scene even before she was back on her feet.

The police said the rider wore a helmet and the pillion rider had covered his face with a handkerchief and added that they were examining the CCTV footage to nab the culprits.

Sources said the police were also looking at the mobile phone tower locations of known criminals to zero-in on the culprits. Chennai has been seeing a spate of chain-snatching incidents. After a spate of such cases were reported in quick succession, the police had issued advisories to the public in the past.

The police had advised citizens, especially women, to desist from wearing gold chains while walking alone.

This was especially so because chain-snatchers, often small-time criminals looking for easy money, found women easy targets, the police said.
