IOB heist: Loot pegged at 130 sovereigns worth 29 lakh
Nearly five days after the Indian Overseas bank branch in Virugambakkam was burgled, police disclosed that at least 130 sovereigns worth Rs 29 lakh were stolen in the heist by a gang headed by bank maintenance staff Sabi Lal, a native of Nepal.

So far, two car drivers, Top Bahadur and Pratap, were arrested and the car in which the accused travelled with the loot was seized. Other suspects, including Sabi Lal, are in Nepal and efforts were on to get the custody of at least seven men involved in the crime through government channels, the police said. The other accused include Dev Singh, Bheemlal, Kudusingh, Thej Bahadur and Ganesh. Nepal police have already secured the wanted men, who are facing a case in Delhi, as well as in Nepal.Â
Police had managed to locate the place from where the suspects purchased the gas cylinders that were used to break the lockers and collected video clippings and zeroed in on the suspects.Â
Police had also found that the suspects had used an Innova registered in Karnataka to escape after the crime. The arrested duo confessed that Sabi Lal, who had worked in Chennai and Thiruvallur for the past 15 years in various companies as security guard and maintenance staff, was behind the crime.Â
